DEVELOPER DIARY Pt. 2 of 3

Boo-Ty Call designer Dan Stong here, back again for another entry into how this game came about! We left off knowing this would be a game about bonin’ ghosts and that it would be a party game, but how did it get to be this game of deduction and seduction? Well, here’s a look under the kilt of the whole thing. I won’t hold it against you if you skip to the bottom.

The game at the time (originally called Soul Mates) had multiple players hidden and one player as the medium trying to hook up with the one spirit they read about in the obituaries that day that sounded dreamy. One of the hidden players would be the ghost and the others would be Horny Demons or Poltergeists trying to obscure the guesser’s choice by pretending to be the spirit themselves. Originally the hidden players would communicate who they were with cards showing abstract art that were visual euphemisms (A train going into a tunnel, someone getting dollar bills shot out of a gun onto their face, or a one-way bus ticket with its destination line stating “pound town”).  However, we felt this was too close to other things we had been working on and that existed in the market already.

Then, we shifted to having the medium ask open-ended questions that the ghosts just answered but it was either too easy or too hard for the medium to discern who was who based on the question they had to come up with and the order in which players responded. It ultimately was a bit of a hot mess.

I started messing around with new ways that limited player communication. Leaning into more fun seance staples like knocking and other audio manifestations as well as the idea of visual apparitions/possession as charades. To make it easier on the players who were ghosts, they would each get an identity card and we implemented the 2x4 grid of choices for the medium to have to pick from as they would now have to assign one of the cards to each ghost player.  The  medium now also had question and limitation cards (puppeteering another player, spelling things out backwards, using only your fingers, etc), but some of those were proving a little difficult during our playtests.

In our next iteration, we moved into combining the question and limiter on a single card for the Seance card. However, when it came to playtesting, we had a few concerns brought up. In our current build, players would be answering 3 questions before the medium could guess, even if they knew the answer earlier, and it gave some of the ghosts a bit of performance anxiety as they could potentially be doing this for up to 21 questions before being able to be the medium themselves in a full table game. It was a lot. We decided to try and invert the roles, so now there would only be 1 ghost in the grid that was represented by a player and everyone else would be racing as mediums to identify who that ghost was and tap them before anyone else did, and the game finally clicked into place!

That’s all for today! Hope you found the insights into how the game came to be interesting, and if you don’t, fret not, friendo, there's only one of these posts left!  Remember to keep sending your ghost card suggestions to us right here: Submit your suggestions RIGHT HERE! as we love getting to read them all.

Speaking of ghost stories...

INTRODUCING: Spiritualism, Debriefed by Herman Butternuts (Part 1 of 3)

As you can imagine, the creation of BOO-TY CALL required intense research and a hard, long, and deep dive into the history of spiritualism. During our studies we stumbled across the diary of a fellow paranormal researcher inside a box of nudie mags in a loft space of an old New York tenement building. While the contents of the box were both curious and sticky, we found the diary’s insights into the rise of Mediums and Psychics through the turn of the 20th century quite fascinating, and thus we’ve decided to present a selection of entries here to you know, with all the old-timey smut intact:

October 13, 1850,

My dearest Tabitha,

Since you have passed, I have been ever so lonely. Though I am yet a young man, I have grown tired of the devil’s handshake and still feel a deep loyalty to you my bride, though you are beyond this mortal coil. I have decided to enlist the aid of some spiritualist sisters who operate just down the road. They assured me it would be no simple task to give any form to a ghost, let alone enough to engage in making the beast with two backs as I hoped, but they would try their hardest to satisfy me aurally if nothing else.

We began by opening ourselves to the beyond, calling out our consent for spirits to join us, all the while I was imagining all the lewd things we would do once reunited: the butter churner; the whirling mustache dervish; and the Cincinnati chili dog.  All our old favorites would be on the menu. I was so lost in thought that I hardly heard the first POP confirming that we had made contact with a spirit! I asked if it was you, my Tabitha who was here. A sensuous POP rang out, signaling an electric “YES” from the spirit. I asked if you could see me. “YES” again in that sultry popping!  I could hardly contain my rising excitement until I caught the odd sight of a shoeless foot just below the dress line of one sister. I asked another question, something about your state of nakedness. I then saw those toes curl and snap, producing the very same popping noise I had been hearing.

Oh Tabitha, I was awful then. Standing up with a loud huff so fast my suspenders snapped, I inadvertently shared more than what was on my mind as my trousers hit my ankles. I called them fraudsters as I clutched my pants to my waist and promised to take them down with a cutting account of the day, the very same I now author here. I couldn’t say if it was my tone or if they had noted my lack of underclothes, but they were visibly shaken as I left. I will find a way to you, my dearest Tabitha. Someone must know how!

Your humble servant in love,

Herman Butternuts, Truth Exposer

What an origin story! It’s exactly like when we saw Iron Man but if he was just bereaved and super horny! We will be back with the next entry in a few days but until then please keep sending us your ghost card ideas! Submit your suggestions RIGHT HERE!

GHOST CARD REVEAL: Poultrygeist

That’s right Fab Fans – this backer-suggested card is now inside every copy of BOO-TY CALL because YOU MADE IT HAPPEN! Congrats! Keep those ghost card ideas coming – you're all a bunch of sickos and we love it!

That’s it for today’s update! Don’t forget to keep sharing the campaign with all your Fab Friends and until next time – enjoy the Experience!
