We weren’t planning on posting this weekend, but then you HAD to go and break another stretch goal! Congratulations!! And not only that, this means we get to reveal 3 new stretch goals RIGHT NOW! That’s right! This last stretch goal was a two-fer! Now, every copy of GOOD COMICS FOR BAD PEOPLE comes with this Kickstarter exclusive dust jacket that you’ll never find anywhere else! Additionally, we’re also adding two more ghost cards to each copy of BOO-TY CALL based on your suggestions! We’ve already selected the first card and we can’t wait for you to see it on the next Extra Fab Friday! You might be asking yourself, "What kind of unhinged person would design such a game?" Well, his name is Dan Stong, and he’s written a series of Developer Diaries taking you behind the scenes of the making of BOO-TY CALL. Take it away, Dan!
Hey FabFriends,
Let’s start with an introduction. My name is Dan Stong and I’m the designer for BOO-TY CALL! I’ve written for Skybound’s party games (Superfight, Red Flags, Pitchstorm, and Trial by Trolley) and done development and writing work on several of our bigger games too (Kim-Joy’s Magic Bakery!, the Valor and Villainy series, and Wonderland’s War to name a few). This will be my first produced game design and I’m very excited for it to be a part of THE EXTRA FABULOUS EXPERIENCE! I’ve been a fan of Zach’s stuff since I stumbled across his “Rise and Shine” comic on reddit years back and getting to team up with him to make this game a reality has been a dream come true. When I heard he liked my design, I felt like the most beautiful girl at prom.
Enough about me though, let’s talk about the dead elephant in lingerie. This could get a little more than PG-13, so bear with me or leave the room. This game is about mediums hooking up with sexy ghosts, and most people will say “But Dan, why for? What did your parents do to you? Should we get you some help?” The answers to which are “I’m getting there, they showed me Poltergeist and Mel Brooks movies at a young age, and definitely, but not for this, thank you.”
A few years ago, I was listening to a podcast about true crime mixed with supernatural events and the episode was about people who were having or had been having physical relations with ghosts. The stories of people and their many ecto-gasms had shocked me at first, but as I listened, I thought back to the many popularized examples of some lonely souls in the beyond using the veil between life and death as an elaborate dental dam to get frisky with a lover. I’m talking about popular cinematic staples like “Ghost”, “Scary Movie 2”, and the scene in the original “Ghostbusters” where Dan Akroyd got a blowie from a ghost.
Skip forward to 2021, when I heard we were looking to do a party game, and the idea of psychics was put forward. I initially thought about games like “Wavelength”, “Medium”, and “Mysterium”. I liked how they gave you a task of linking up using minimal information or interpreting a ghost’s eerie clues. I started to work on my own design and wanted to make sure the rules were light and teach time was minimum to make it more of a party game. Mostly, I needed a hook, something that set it aside from the more serious and spooky games within that genre. I then thought back to how these people in the interviews had talked up their sex-periences with ghosts and started thinking up a story about a lonely person who was burnt out on dating apps, who also just happened to be a successful medium. I mean, they might try to text the other side to see if anyone “was up” right? And that’s how we got our theme!
